How It Works

How Laser Tattoo Removal Actually Works

We use the Alma Harmony XL Pro, a high-power Q-switched Nd:YAG platform that delivers ultra-short pulses at both 1064nm and 532nm wavelengths to shatter tattoo ink into microscopic fragments. Once the ink is fragmented, your own immune system takes over — specialized cells gradually clear the broken-down pigment out of your skin over the weeks following each session.

Because your body needs real time to clear ink between treatments, sessions are spaced further apart than most other laser treatments — typically 6–8 weeks. Your ink's color, depth, density, and age all affect how many sessions you'll need and how well it responds, which is why every plan starts with a real consultation and ink assessment rather than a generic package. As always, consultations are completely free.

Dark inks — black, blue, and red — typically respond best. Lighter colors like yellow and light green can be more resistant to treatment. We'll give you an honest read on what to expect for your specific tattoo before you commit to a plan.

What We Assess At Consultation

Ink color & density
Tattoo age & depth
Skin tone & tattoo location
Professional vs. amateur ink
Realistic fading vs. removal expectations
What To Expect

Before & After Your Session

A little preparation and the right aftercare make a real difference in both comfort and results.

Before

Before Your Session

A few simple steps in the days leading up to treatment help your skin respond well.

  • Avoid sun exposure & tanning beforehand
  • Keep the tattooed area clean and moisturized
  • Skip retinoids/exfoliants on the area for a few days
  • Arrive with clean, product-free skin
After

After Your Session

Treated skin needs real care between sessions while your body clears the ink.

  • Redness, swelling, or blistering for several days is normal
  • Keep the area clean and avoid picking at scabs or blisters
  • Wear sunscreen on treated skin once healed
  • Avoid swimming, soaking, or hot tubs until fully healed

Fading Between Sessions

Your immune system continues clearing fragmented ink for weeks after each visit — progress continues between appointments.

Why It Matters

Laser Removal vs. Fade Creams & DIY Methods

Over-the-counter fade creams and DIY removal methods aren't backed by clinical evidence and can cause burns, scarring, or skin discoloration without meaningfully removing ink.

Laser tattoo removal is the only method with real clinical evidence behind it — targeting the ink itself rather than damaging the surrounding skin.

Physician Insight

"I'd rather set honest expectations upfront than promise a tattoo will disappear completely. Some ink fades beautifully; some just fades significantly. Either way, patients deserve a real answer before they start, not after session six."

What Patients Say
Common Questions

Tattoo Removal FAQ

What patients ask most before their first session.

Most amateur tattoos need 4–6 sessions, while professional tattoos — which use more ink applied more deeply — often need 6–12. Your provider will give you a realistic estimate after assessing your tattoo's ink density, depth, and colors.
Most patients describe the sensation as similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. Sessions are brief, and cooling helps keep treatment as comfortable as possible.
Dark inks — black, blue, and red — typically respond best to Q-switched Nd:YAG laser treatment. Lighter colors like yellow and light green can be more resistant and may fade more slowly or incompletely. Your provider will assess your specific ink colors at consultation.
Many tattoos, especially smaller and single-color ones, fade dramatically and can become very difficult to see. Complete removal isn't guaranteed for every tattoo, though — ink age, depth, color, and your body's own response all play a role. We'll give you an honest assessment of what's realistic before you start.
Sessions are typically spaced 6–8 weeks apart, longer than laser hair removal, to give your immune system time to clear fragmented ink between treatments.
Abbott Health & Wellness in Salina offers laser tattoo removal for patients across Sevier County, including Richfield, Manti, Gunnison, and surrounding communities.
